If there's one thing this series does better than anything else, it's that subtle atmosphere of wonder and discovery. Amberground is revealed to us in little snippets of landscape, from deserts to coastal villages to forests to run-down old towns, slowly illuminating the details about a world that's intially introduced in broad, general strokes. The strongly hierarchical structure of Amberground (high-class people live in the light; middle-class people live in dim light; all the other losers can live in total darkness) allows us to look at the big picture, while at the same time following the characters' more personal stories. It's a world that's completely built from top to bottom, creating a unique background from which any number of stories can emerge.

Much of the next five episodes in the series are Pokémon-fashion. Marin and her trusty sidekick Melan Blue have fun little adventures all around the country while a bad guy keeps sending enemies after her. Along the way, Marin finds two other ampoules containing Monomakia willing to protect her. So now instead of relying just on Melan, she can throw these containers at monsters, scream out a name, and *POOF!* instant Monomakia. While Brigadoon does tread the old Weekly Monster formula, it's at least smart enough to keep the rest of the story moving along briskly. Shrouded in mystery, the whole “What child is this?! Is she our saviour?!” gimmick works wonders and keeps viewers occupied, while at the same time, the battle between rich and poor continues to fester on screen. Dabbling in shoujo-ai undertones and the emotional lives of all the side characters, the series keeps itself busy and fresh, using the scenes as an opportunity to evenly develop all of the characters amidst the attacking monsters.

There are two categories of “once in a lifetime” anime series out there. There are those that fill every part of you with emotion and revelation and can't help being watched over and over again. Then there are shows like Brigadoon that are truly enjoyable, but can only be watched—“once in a lifetime.” You've watched it that requisite one time and nothing short of its spontaneous combustion can remind you that it still sits on your shelf. It's easy to see why, too. It has an absolutely engaging storyline that hustles you eagerly through its episodes, but there are so many other negative aspects offsetting this that the two sides cancel each other out and leave you with only a shiny disc and an empty feeling.

It's hard to tell if A Midnight Opera is an exercise in plain marketing hubris—pandering directly to the Hot Topic crowd—or simply a case of the author taking himself and his work far too seriously and churning out cliché after cliché, convinced of his own genius, unaware of the tripe he's created. It's possible that it's a combination of both, but that doesn't change the fact that this book isn't worth reading. We're all still waiting for the first truly great American manga to come down the pike; once something really spectacular hits, maybe it'll finally find the legitimacy and respect in the marketplace it has the potential to harvest. Until then, we're stuck with junk like A Midnight Opera, a pale, hackneyed imitation of the real thing. Skip it.

The other major problem is the art. The artist's bio in the back of the book states that he's never had any formal art training, a claim backed up by the sometimes unbelievably bad art this book has to display. Steinbach's biggest problems involve perspective and anatomy; he struggles to make his characters look the same from panel to panel and especially has a difficult time making their profile shots match their forward shots. Action is rendered with lots of diagonal lines and wacky angles, but still it feels static. And it's hard to tell if this is Steinbach's fault or not, but the theater marquee for the “Rue Morgue” (see, it's gothic, right?) is one of the most unprofessional looking things I've seen in an American manga thus far; Steinbach simply drew the marquee and then downloaded a generic gothic font and slapped the letters on there. He didn't even bother to drop the image into Photoshop and tilt the letters so they matched the perspective of the sign. He could have done this in MS Paint.

Dialogue like this makes me want to roll my eyes so hard they burst out of the back of my skull. I'd be dead, but at least I'll have made my point. When the dialogue doesn't sound like Steinbach lifted it out of some goth teenager's Livejournal, it sounds like he stole it straight from Anne Rice. I defy anyone to take this book seriously when the characters are talking like that. The typos don't help, either.

A Midnight Opera follows the questionably named Ein Delalune, an undead gothic rock star who's forced to work with his bloodthirsty, lycanthropic brother in order to stop the undead nation (which sounds like a failed metal band) from raising hell in modern society. Not a terrible idea for a manga, right? Well, unfortunately the author has read far too many Anne Rice novels and has taken what could have been a modestly entertaining bit of clichéd gothy fun and transformed it into a ridiculous carnival of terrible dialogue, amateurish art and thick layers of undeserved pretension. If you thought something like Interview with the Vampire was overwrought and silly, A Midnight Opera will have you howling.

American-created manga (AmeriManga to some, OEL and WorldManga to others) has had a hard time finding its audience here in America for a few important reasons; one, it isn't Japanese, and two, as it happens, a lot of it isn't very good. One of the fundamental problems behind the entire concept of AmeriManga is that you're asking an artist—sometimes an artist with no prior real-world publishing or writing experience, someone who doesn't understand the intricate and at times downright scientific methods behind writing a competent story—to emulate something foreign. Can creativity be found in an exercise that, from its very inception, is derivative? How can we expect real innovation from an artist who we know is attempting to ape a particular style rather than create their own? These questions plague Hans Steinbach's A Midnight Opera; it's a wholly derivative, over-the-top, ludicrously amateurish foray into the now-tired realm of supernatural gothic drama.

The extended storyline jumps from plot point to plot point, creating just as much confusion as it does action. The big finish seems to rely more on random acts of magic rather than some gripping, well-scripted plan of attack. And for a supernatural series, the art just doesn't look all that scary—except for the monsters, of course. Perhaps we should be thankful that it's moved away from the overcrowded supernatural-mystery-investigation field ... but now it's just shifted into the equally overcrowded supernatural-combat field. This volume gets points for trying, but it's still a long way from rising above the rest of the pack.

(Compare this to other supernatural series where the characters talk themselves into corners with elaborate yet useless terminology.) Meanwhile, the focus on action also means more sound effects, but one will not find a trace of Japanese syllabary here—they've all been swapped out for the standard comic-book range of whooshes and bangs. Fortunately, the edited sound effects are not too intrusive; most of them are placed in background areas where they don't interfere with the action and could even be skimmed over depending on your reading speed.

Similarly, the artwork is a mixed bag of flaws and improvements—Nishi's linework is clearly getting more confident over time, as this volume isn't quite as sloppy as the first, but the design aesthetic still looks like a cute and cuddly cartoon with ghosts slapped on it. Granted, some of the creatures are magnificently chilling (the freakish mouths that start appearing all over people's bodies? Genius) and Muhyo's punishments like the "Night Train" to the underworld carry an epic sense of scale ... but the characters themselves still look like they just stepped out of a grade-school coloring book. The backgrounds aren't that great either, consisting mostly of mechanically drawn buildings and interiors, or worse yet, nothing at all. Meanwhile, the page layouts add to both the action and confusion: full-page spreads and big panels give plenty of room to show off those big attacks, but transitional scenes often fail to convey the plot points that matter—when Roji is calligraphing a handful of magical wards, let's see him writing those wards! Instead, vital events like that are shoved off into a small single panel, making the story harder to follow.

Unfortunately, this excitement seems to have derailed Yoshiyuki Nishi's storytelling abilities: the switch to full-on combat mode instead of stand-alone investigative cases leads to a chain of confusing events. There's a scene, for example, where Muhyo releases some kind of sprite to get rid of some nasty spirits ... except that we never quite see where the sprite came from, so suddenly there's this puzzling sequence where a mysterious creature is wandering around in search of evil. It's enough to make you think that they accidentally printed the wrong manga by mistake. And this happens regularly throughout the arc: the sudden cut from Roji's exam to the trouble caused by Enchu, the poorly-timed scene changes between what the various characters are up to, and a chaotic finish that amounts to "throw enough magical things at the bad guys and they'll go away." Building up action and excitement is one thing, but without a clear sense of how the characters are defeating the villain, it's just a exercise in shiny supernatural special effects that make no sense.

To ease readers into the flow of the story, this volume starts out with a couple of stand-alone cases: a group of friends trying to let go of their deceased buddy, and a young girl coming to terms with her father's death. Although these stories are good at striking the right emotional note, they're still too short to be anything more than light diversions. The real fun starts when Roji gets called up for his exam and heads to the Magic Law headquarters with Muhyo. Thus begins a storyline that actually affects the main characters, provides some background information as to how this supernatural investigation business works, and provides a back-story for Muhyo and his nemesis. Killing three birds with one stone? That's a smart turn of events right there. Even more importantly, this multi-chapter arc also adds more action and high stakes to the series. Helping out troubled citizens and capturing assorted ghosts is one thing ... but taking on a high-powered rival in an epic magical battle is definitely a new level of excitement.

This volume also shows Yoshiyuki Nishi's art beginning to stabilize: more consistent character designs, tighter lines, and fewer misproportions. Yet the cartoonish style still isn't as ghostly and supernatural as it could be, and the story—despite its growing ambitions—is still too sloppy to compare to the best in the genre. As always, Sho-U Tajima's artwork is cool and clean—elevating acts of murder to sublime, aesthetic cruelty. Content aside, it is elegant, sensual, and instantly, stylistically recognizable. But in spite of the confident, fluid lines, there is a paradoxically hard-edged quality to the buildings and bodies portrayed. It was a pleasure to note that, with the exception of the nude shocker in the beginning, volume six thankfully dials down the extremes of violence a few notches. While an up close and personal exploration of the contents of a woman's skull or a man's abdomen is admittedly a pretty neat trick, any master of the horror genre can tell you that the scariest thing in the world is that which is not shown. Nothing we see on the page can ever frighten us as much as what we see only in our minds' eye, and in this volume, the worst of all possible outcomes is left just over the horizon. Bravo.

We are momentarily distracted by government testing of Tetora Nishizono's ability to swap personalities with other people and by the serial killer a la mode, who turns out to be the bomber-stalker from Machi's past. As usual, we see him take out a bunch of innocent bystanders before getting taken out himself. Then, about halfway through the volume, things start to come to head in a big way. Machi and Sasayama are entrusted with Tetora, but the Gakuso Society quickly catches up with them, revealing to Machi by implication that her father was involved in upper echelons the organization. On the Gakuso's ocean liner, they learn that the XY Shinji Nishizono personality is not complete until it combines with the XX personality held by Miwa. The completed personality will then become Lucy Monostone, the perfect killer.

In case anyone missed the “sub” in the title of this review, yes, Right Stuf is releasing the series, like its predecessor, without an English version. Unlike its predecessor, this set is slim on extras, boasting only clean opening and ending animation (along with some boring Japanese promos) and a substantially less substantial booklet. The booklet does afford one a chance to admire Mori's clean, sharp character designs by way of an extensive collection of line art, and the last few pages are devoted to an exclusive—and lengthy—interview with her that is quite interesting, in spite of its prosaic nature.

Emma's second season is undeniably more conventional than its first—romantic drama abounds and instead of fragile hope, it ends on a note of swooning romanticism that would be cheesy were it not so satisfying—but that's weak criticism in the face of the quiet strength of its central romance. Traditionally Victorian romance may be to men what The Three Stooges is to women, but that just goes to show how useless tradition can be. Emma is a series that anyone on the lookout for something slow, bittersweet and rewarding can enjoy, regardless of testosterone level.

The meticulous reconstruction of Victorian England, from the gilded excesses of the ruling class to the homey roughness of their servants, still dominates the series' production. Active background animation and lush art keep London living and breathing (even without William's effusive monologues about its history), and the period detail in the clothing and manners of the characters is breathtaking given its animated nature. However, the shift to intense romanticism also showcases some of the series' less obvious technical merits. Kobayashi displays a refreshing willingness to trust his visuals in the absence of explanatory dialogue, allowing Eleanor to do her most important speaking with a pair of startling, expressive eyes, and letting the stiff, unyielding faces of patriarchs such as Viscount Campbell say everything that needs saying about the inflexible nature of their dying class system. The romance also affords Kobayashi the opportunity to combine gorgeous, lyrical imagery with Kunihiko Ryo's beautiful minimalist score, most remarkably during a delicate moonlit tryst between William and Emma.

Even the plot contrivances leading up to Emma and William's inevitable reunion unfold with a grace that makes their preposterousness seem natural, and the repercussions of their meeting are as achingly honest as they are devastating.

Where Emma's first season derived its most pleasurable moments from Mrs. Stownar's dry, knowing relationship with Emma, with her death the second series shifts its focus exclusively onto Emma's romantic travails. It's impossible not to miss the sharp, secretly compassionate old lady, but it's actually the subsequent shift to pure romance that gives real pause. Neither William nor Emma, as strong and fundamentally decent as they are, are particularly arresting individuals. There's no guarantee that they will be capable of supporting a full-fledged romantic drama, and theirs is the type of pure love that basically destroys any possible romantic turnarounds, rendering its course quite predictable. Add to that the fact that their basic predicament has been the base of countless romances since Shakespeare popularized it with Romeo and Juliet, and you have reason for trepidation even after the superb showing the series made in its first season. As it turns out, such fears are entirely unfounded. True to its name, the second season is a simple Victorian romance, but it's a simple romance that, for all of its white-bread conventionality, is possessed of a gentle, slow-moving power.

BSC's soundtrack is virtually invisible, the musical equivalent of theater stagehands: it supports whatever mood is prevalent, but makes damn sure not to call attention to itself. Given the overall tone of the series, this means that the score tends heavily towards uninteresting humorous compositions. The opening and closing songs are typical pop fluff.

ADV handles the dub with their usual second-best aplomb: professional and generally pleasant without being outstanding. Characters match well across languages, and the script is a virtual clone of the subtitles. Pucchan is a little ruder in language (but not in tone) than his Japanese counterpart and Rein's motor-mouth doesn't translate well into English, but Cyndi (who could be a wig-wearing clone of R.O.D. the TV's Maggie) is hilariously dead-on.

Those familiar with Bottle Fairy will recognize many of the stylistic elements used here, such as the faux screen-tone dots and concentric circular waves of sunlight. BSC also reduces the action to virtually nil, resulting in a run of episodes that consists largely of people sitting around and talking, with a little walking around thrown in for good measure. What action there is is predictably simple—minimal movement, no backgrounds, and lots of cutting to imply movement—indicating that perhaps the lack of action is all that prevents the animation from flirting with the underbelly of mediocrity. Backgrounds are sufficient to their purpose and no more: good for communicating location and geography but absolutely useless for atmosphere.

So what are the (dozen? half-dozen?) viewers who are waiting in hopes that the hints at a larger picture in the first volume will bear fruit to do? Well, after this volume...wait some more. This volume shows only passing signs that the show is even tinkering with the idea of moving beyond the weightless silliness of episodes past. Of the five episodes presented here, only two manage to evoke any emotional response. In the first episode we get another glimpse of Rino's insecurity, while the school test episode forefronts her abandonment issues with surprisingly affecting results. Unfortunately the other three episodes are so forgettable that they don't even deserve the epithet "filler." The word "filler" implies the filling of gaps with something, but there's so little to these episodes that it's actually a chore to remember what they were about. Most attempts at seriousness are crude and painfully half-hearted, though the series' habit of undercutting them with straight-faced parody—often by including Pucchan as a participant in an emotional scene—helps immensely. As such, what one gets from this disc will depend heavily on one's sense of humor. Luckily there're no "Youth Cannons" or flaming puppet punches this time around, but there're also less of the nudge-in-the-ribs shoujo-ai parodies that were first volume's comic highlights. On the rest of the humor...whether the pain in your gut at the thought of a girl's puppet giving her a "live on without me" deathbed speech comes from belly-laughs or plain old nausea should determine your compatibility with it.

The licensing of some series is a mystery. Take Best Student Council. The story thus far isn't doing a stellar job of impressing, there's precious little drama, no big laughs, it doesn't seem to target any specific fan group, and while Director Yoshiaki Iwasaki is a past master of all things cute (Bottle Fairy), he's at best an adept purveyor of cute fluff, and at worst a bandwagon-hopping hack. There is scriptwriter Yousuke Kuroda, whose resume is equal parts high comedy (Excel Saga) and brutal drama (Infinite Ryvius); that he's proved capable of powerful third-act transformations (think Trigun and Madlax) does provide a glimmer of hope that BSC might evolve. Of course, his last collaboration with director Iwasaki was the ultimately empty Mao-chan. And the trite, obvious dialogue so far doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

Also falling into the fluff category is the dialogue, which typically involves Karin pining wistfully for Kazune or Jin, or maybe wailing loudly when she gets teased. There is nothing particularly eloquent about any of this, and even the discussions of magical theory sound like the ramblings of an amateur fantasy writer—seriously, things like "Chaos Seeds" and "Love Evolution" sound like things that go in a first draft. The use of sound effects is fairly simple as well, and while translations are placed next to each of them, it's easy to miss among the busy artwork. A fanart gallery and some 4-panel strips come as bonuses, and the usual cultural glossary sits in the back of this volume (although the story doesn't need a whole lot of explanation anyway).

So what's there to be found in this volume that makes it an improvement over its predecessors? Well, the story starts making sense now that we know about future events (which is actually an interesting twist from stories that become clearer after explaining past events), the tension between Karin and friends continues to develop, and the art is as intensely cute as ever. But the sum of these parts never quite adds up, and these chapters end up looking like a patchwork of poorly executed story fragments: a time travel event, a hot springs episode, more enemies and more powers, and the lead heroine spending more time on dates than actually saving the world from evil. If this is supposed to be a magical fantasy about the future of our world, it doesn't look like a very bright one.

Then just past the halfway mark comes the ultimate clunker: a hot-springs trip. Seriously, has Koge-Donbo had a single original thought at all while working on this series? However, in a pleasantly surprising turn of events, the much-overdone setting leads to some long-awaited major developments—Kazune explains what he saw in the future, the bad guys show up and reveal their latest evil creation, and a new form of magic evolves between Karin and Kazune. Hey, this is almost starting to sound like a good magical girl series! Even more encouragingly, the last few scenes reveal a plot point that raises the drama level to new heights. At the same time, however, it's the kind of plot point that third-rate authors pull out as a last-resort cliffhanger—"You won't believe what happens to so-and-so in the future!" So this could be a dramatic improvement ... or a downturn into even more predictable fantasy drivel.

No matter where this story is headed, though, one thing remains true about the art: it's dangerously cute and surprisingly creative in its sense of character design. Most readers are already familiar with the characters' elaborate god transformations, but what may surprise them are the convincing civilian outfits as well—Karin and Kazune on their winter date, Jin's everyday street clothes, even the variety of casual wear during the hot springs stay. But the artistic highlights are the action scenes, where sparkling effects, frilly costumes and strong dramatic angles make all of Karin's magic spells a delight to watch. Unfortunately, the one major battle in this volume ends far too quickly, and in fact that's a criticism that applies to the series as a whole: poor pacing and a tendency to rush each scene. Of course, it doesn't help either that Koge-Donbo's fancy style leads to frequent messes of screentones and bug-eyes. She does manage to turn out a few decent scenes—mostly when the panels open up and allow more room for each image—but more often it looks exactly like the kind of fluff one has come to expect from the genre.

Few plot devices are quite as dynamic as time travel: all it takes is one leap to open up the door to numerous twists, paradoxes, and new modes of storytelling. In the case of Kamichama Karin Chu, it finally provides a framework of where the storyline is headed, which is surely an improvement on the Chaos-Seed-of-the-week (or month, rather) format of earlier chapters. At the same time, romantic tensions continue to grow between Karin and her boys, providing the necessary element of character drama that fills in the gaps between the action. So why, then, does this series continue to fall flat? Maybe it's because it continues to settle for "good enough" ... which really isn't good enough in a genre where everything's already been done.

Right from the first chapter, this one jumps into cliché territory: it's Christmas time and Karin wants to have a good time with Kazune. Chapters like these are what stop the fantasy element from developing; instead of learning more about the conflict that lays ahead, we get stuck with seasonal romantic fluff (although at least it ends with a pretty convincing kiss). The next chapter is more poignant in tone, with Kazune disappearing into the future and Karin sorely missing him, but then along comes Jin with his slick little attempts to win over Karin. This leads to some mildly entertaining comedy (plus learning more about Jin's home life), but a more pressing question arises: are we doing a magical-girl series or revolving-door romance? Sure, it's always important to develop character relationships, but having the lead girl spend all this time with the members of her personal harem is causing the story to lose its sense of purpose.

The only few complaints I have about this series are the few episodes that are used completely to give a follow-up on what's happened so far in the story. There's also the problem that at times there can be a lot of Japanese writing on screen, which is good because it can add to the comical/dramatic affect. It's also bed because you have to be a fast reader to read both what's on the screen and what the characters are saying.

As of now, Kare Kano has been picked up by Right Stuf Int. and should be released some time in Fall 2001. It has been fansubbed by various groups, but you shouldn't be able to pick it up anywhere right now that Right Stuf has announced that they hold the rights for its American release.

Along with this delightful plot, Kare Kano shows off some of the most impressive animation put into a television series. The character's movement is always fluid and the background is carefully done; yet they both show off a certain kind of simplicity which is absolutely charming.

The music fits in perfectly with the series, and I have purchased all three soundtracks. The background music can often be very silly because of the many comical scenes, yet it has proven to keep me fully entertained. The music for the more serious and romantic scenes such as "Ichigiochie" (Treasure every Meeting) is utterly beautiful. The opening theme, "Tenshi no Yubikiri" (An Angel's Pledge), and the ending theme, "Yume no Naka" (Into the Dream), are particular favorites of mine. I've memorized the lyrics because I've listened to them both more times than the Earth has revolved around the Sun. Did I mention I don't speak Japanese?

Unlike most anime romance series, Kare Kano (the nickname given by the show's fans) doesn't deal with romance triangles or Romeo and Juliet type ordeals, but rather with the idea of growing up, and character development is a major theme throughout the series. We see this later in the series when Yukino opens herself up to the world, and her heart up to Arima. Although Yukino is the main character, the focus sometimes fades off of her and into the life of another character, which does a lot to keep the show interesting. We see Tsubasa, whose father is remarrying against her wishes, Arima whose parents ran away after his birth to escape the responsibility of caring for him, and Kano who thinks she has a lesbian stalker.

Kare Kano is one of the best anime that I've seen for quite some time. One of the elements that makes it so addictive is the fact that it is so realistic. The director, Hideaki Anno actually observed and studied many "regular" Japanese school children before beginning his work on the show, in order to make the characters as real as possible. Of course, the reality of the series doesn't take away from the slapstick comedy, which often includes some things that don't happen in many schools. Examples would include jumping off of buildings, kicking cars across the street and spontaneously exploding from being mistaken for a third grader.

The story follows the life of Yukino, who at school is a model student, where as at home she is the exact opposite. Ever since she was young, Yukino has been obsessed with being praised, forcing her to strive to be the best at everything. Since Yukino has molded herself into some sort of model, she has concealed her inner self from everyone except her family.

When the ceremony accepting Yukino's class into high school approaches, she's all set to be chosen to give the acceptance speech on behalf of the entire class. Her fantasy is soon shattered, though, when a new classmate named Arima Souichiro is chosen instead of her. In the next few weeks, Yukino finds that Arima making her life even more miserable. As concentrated as the series' charm is in the hands of its characters, it won't unsaddle anyone to learn that Akira's art is heavily focused on her characters. Haruna is convincingly beautiful, Macharu's monkey-like touches are adorable, and the cast overall is attractive and distinctive (particularly around the eyes and lips) enough to elevate the series' artistry a notch or two above the norm. There's nothing particularly revolutionary or even unusual about the layouts, backgrounds (which, as per shojo tradition, are nearly nonexistent) or anything else Akira draws, but it gets the job done and without appearing shabby in the process. Akira's heart is clearly more in her comic compositions than her emotionally-charged ones, but without a visible enough disparity to have a noticeable effect.

Viz's presentation is similarly workmanlike. The book is standard Shojo Beat: unprepossessing cover, standardized spine, decent heft and print quality, and basically zilch for extras (a one-page collection of translation notes and an amusing postscript notwithstanding). Sound effects are all replaced with appropriate English translations, with an effort made to replicate their role in the artwork—an approach that will irk some more than others, but is unlikely to cause any uproars either way.

Some series were obviously never intended to live as long as they did. They were meant to die modest, dignified deaths early in their runs, but somehow ended up croaking of old age while still hooked up to a blinking bank of narrative life-support machines. Monkey High! comes very close to being one of these. Its popularity obviously surprised its author, Shouko Akira, who comments frequently on her astonishment at its longevity. And there is no denying that the freshness of those first few volumes, when the idea of the aloof gorgeous girl falling for the goofy little guy with the bright outlook was still reinvigorating, has worn off. So too has the breezy humor and effervescent lightness of those early volumes steadily given way to a darker, more angsty and entirely more conventional tone as, of necessity, romantic complications and their attendant drama slowly supplant the series' once refreshingly uncomplicated romantic comedy.

The main bonus feature on this DVD is a round-table discussion with the principal Japanese voice actors, talking about the Hell Girl series in general—naturally, they just have to bring up the classic "What would you do if Hell Correspondence was real?" question. Collectors will also enjoy the reversible cover and two art cards that come with the disc case (apparently the theme of Volume 3 is "legs").

It seems that Hell Girl is constantly teetering between horror-genre mediocrity and storytelling brilliance: one wrong move, and it'll dip into a boring episode about some unhappy person no one cares about, but one stroke of genius, and it can turn out masterpieces like "Purgatory Girl." That episode alone makes the whole disc worth it, just to see how elements of horror, folklore and drama tie together to create a moving and memorable tale. And even if the story quality varies from episode to episode, there's always the eye-catching art and chilling music. Yes, there are times when style overrides substance—but when the substance is good, it's really, really good.

The general mood of the series would not be complete without music, and these episodes are no exception when it comes to the sound of mystery and foreboding. The scoring is often minimal, with solo instruments or small groups playing mere skeletons of a melody—and that's all they need to do to evoke a chill up the spine. Full orchestral blast is reserved for the melodramatic revenge sequences, and even those are getting less screen time, so this soundtrack leans more towards an understated approach. The opening and ending songs, meanwhile, feature well-crafted arrangements that are still enjoyable to listen to after this many episodes.

With the focus turning towards character drama, the script calls for a serious tone—and the English dub delivers well in that respect. The cast achieves a careful balance between casual speech and letting it all out, resulting in a performance where one can feel the tension and emotion—but in a subtle, beneath-the-surface way. However, the pronunciation of Japanese names seems to be a stumbling block on a regular basis (is it Fukumoto? Fukumoto?), and let's face it, Mamiko Noto so completely owns the role of Hell Girl that anyone trying to do that voice in any another language falls short. The dub script does deviate from the direct translation quite regularly—often rewording a sentence to mean the same thing but fit more easily in English—but these changes rarely have any major effect on the actual story.

Of course, this shocking reveal (and other key moments) would not be possible without the continued high level of visual artistry. There are plenty of eye-candy pieces in this set of episodes, from neon city lights to sunset-bathed old mansions to oil paintings shrouded in obsession. These moments of extreme beauty, set against the dark themes of the series, create an emotional effect that would not be possible with story alone. And of course, the backgrounds in Ai Enma's underworld are as surreal as ever, although it's been seen plenty of times previously. There's more to animation than just background work, however, and that's when the visuals falter: a lot of the character animation is only average in quality, even choppy at times, and it's easy to see where shortcuts are being taken to minimize the amount of movement. Character design is another weak point: sure, Hell Girl and the main cast are instantly memorable, but the disposable one-off characters who call on her powers are exactly that—disposable, forgettable protagonists who disappear from the mind's eye as soon as the episode is over.

More interesting, however, is the twist in Episode 12, where the victim actually wants to be sent to Hell, for reasons which are more complex than can be described in one sentence. Departures from formula like this one are what make the series compelling, and the turnaround in the finale is a genuine shock that makes the previous 22 minutes worth it.

However, the real gem on this disc is Episode 13's "Purgatory Girl", which puts forth the idea of Hell Girl being an ongoing legend that resurfaces from era to era. Hajime gets his moment in the spotlight here, doing some serious sleuthing (rather than just being the "voice of conscience" in the more ordinary episodes), and expanding the Hell Girl mythos from urban-legend gimmick to true folklore. This single episode not only adds new depth, but does it beautifully: the discovery of a musty old bookstore; a long-forgotten horror short story; an author who met Hell Girl in his own time ... and as Hajime unravels these layers of mystery, he comes face to face with one of the most shocking reveals in the series so far.

You know the drill by now—some poor hapless soul pulls up the Hell Correspondence website at midnight, decides to get revenge on the person who's been making their life miserable, then Ai Enma pops up and dishes out some supernatural vengeance. It's a formula that constantly threatens to get old and tiresome, but the third disc of Hell Girl manages to throw some new wrinkles into the plot structure. Supernatural elements are downplayed and character drama takes center stage, Hajime's ongoing investigation becomes more carefully threaded into the series, and in one of the most powerful episodes so far, we find that the roots of Hell Girl's existence run deep into the past. The series may drag at times, but these middle episodes still have some clever twists in store.

Even the first and last episodes in this set, which follow the usual dilemma-request-revenge formula, show signs of tinkering around with the plot. In both these episodes, the unholy covenant is made within the first few scenes, and the rest of the story is spent on choosing whether or not to untie the red thread that would invoke Hell Girl's powers. It makes for a good game of moral tug-of-war (especially in Episode 14, which pits one girl's suffering against "the greater good"), but those who came to see Ai Enma unleashing her supernatural horrors will find this unsatisfying. The focus on human drama in Episodes 11 and 14 demands a certain emotional investment in the characters, and it can be hard to take an interest in them when they only appear for one episode.

Having already established its own unique set of rules and expectations in season one, season two of Hell Girl is free to exploit them however it will. Surprisingly few episodes follow the series' basic plot pattern; you know, the one where some fundamentally decent person is subjected to the foul ministrations of a depraved, selfish or plain evil individual until they need resort to the supernatural offices of Ai Enma. Instead the episodes play with the series' self-made conventions, adding wrinkle after sadistic wrinkle to its standard narrative. There's the boy who can't quite summon the courage to sell his soul for revenge, only to be plunged into a hell of guilt when his inaction has dire consequences. There's the woman who has a long and particularly vicious role-reversal forced upon her by Ai. There're countless episodes that obfuscate or deliberately deceive such that we are left to guess who is damning who and why; episodes where nothing and no one is necessarily what they seem—to other characters, or to us. At times the series is as much mystery as horror, with the Hell Girl as sleuth and the inevitable damning as denouement.

One can't help but see this new playfulness as a symptom of creative restlessness. As an ice-cold, deliberately-mounted horror Hell Girl ran its course last season, and its creators know it. One whiff of the air of camp that hangs over its oddly perfunctory punishment scenes will tell you that. There's a reason it dabbles increasingly in black humor and self-parody, why its episodes end as often with a twist of irony as a twist of the knife. This is a series that is looking to expand its palette, and is having a little fun at the expense of its own pointlessly continued existence in the bargain. The result is a looser, campier, and, for all its complicatedness, less complex variation on the usual Hell Girl cocktail of bitter pessimism and thrillingly nasty comeuppance. It isn't without its appeal. The moments when Ai and her cronies temporarily violate their character, as when Ai tells an uncharacteristic and embarrassingly bad joke, are priceless, and the veneer of camp makes its cruelties a little easier to swallow. Nevertheless it is noticeably inferior to its black, bleak and deceptively simple predecessor.

Focusing on the changes from season one to season two does the second season something of a disservice, though. As with episode-to-episode variation, the alterations the series makes to its second season are important, but small. Takahiro Omori's atmosphere of sinister restraint weathers the lightening of the overall tone largely intact, wrapping the self-consciously twisty plots in a chill blanket of equal parts grim urban alienation and stylized supernatural beauty. The foreboding splendor of Ai's home and the blood-red plain where victims trade their souls for vengeance has not abated, nor has the finely-detailed anomie that blights the cities Ai visits. Nor is the eerie power of the score's dissonant instrumentation, shiveringly pure vocals and apocalyptic guitars to be dismissed merely because they are sometimes used during hokey climaxes.

Each disc contains a single good-natured discussion of the series by some combination of cast and crew. Both of them strive hard to be interesting and generally succeed, if only because of the behind-the-scenes information they impart.

As it wraps up its first season, Hell Girl's strengths are still preeminent. Restraint and atmosphere are still its watchwords—even its climax is allowed to surface slowly rather than rush itself to conclusion. True to Funimation's standard operating procedure, their English adaptation is fairly loosely translated but rarely alters the meaning of a given line and never, ever betrays the intent of a scene. Their willingness to stray from literal translation is rewarded by a script that reads smoothly and naturally, helped immensely by low-key performances to match. Brina Palencia has the unenviable task of following up Mamiko Noto's cold, delicately sensual turn as Hell Girl, and though she wisely opts for interpretation rather than imitation, her voice is sometimes weak and watery when it should be chillingly crystalline. She handles the intensity of the final three episodes well however, and is freed by the English script to do more than simply repeat the same catchphrases over and over. Though Palencia has the lead role, the real star of these episodes is Tsugumi, who Luci Christian invests with such emotional veracity that her every scene is simply heartbreaking. On the strength of her performance alone the emotional impact of the English climax easily surpasses that of the Japanese. It may still seem somewhat out of place in the usually understated series, but in English its heart-tugging power is truly undeniable.

The psychic-boy episode dabbles in black humor, and the episode in which a man uses Hell Girl as an instrument to fulfill his anonymous obsession with a pure-hearted nurse drives home the amoral nature of Hell Girl's service. Also throughout these eight episodes runs a newly acquired streak of character development which is allowed to slowly grow until it thoroughly dominates the climax. Hajime's relationship with Tsugumi takes on a convincing mix of genuine affection and sometimes harsh intolerance, the regret he feels regarding her mother driving him at times to unforgivable extremes in his quest to convince her of the soul-rending effects of vengeance. Tsugumi's evolving attitude towards revenge not only provides arguably the series' most poignant moments when she realizes that hatred isn't only directed at evil people, but also highlights nicely the childlike naiveté that underlies the worldly demeanor that her single-parent lifestyle has forced her to adopt. Ai Enma's character development is telling in a different way. Though always spooky, Hell Girl doesn't become a bon-a-fide monster until she rediscovers her human emotions, a fact that speaks volumes about the series' approach to horror.

The slightly dirty satisfaction that comes from watching nasty people meet nasty ends hasn't waned over the course of the series; the train-wreck appeal of the episodes that adhere to the formula remains as powerful as ever.

But the fact that the book never sees fit to point out that sending humans to hell for killing dogs is the supernatural equivalent of fighting BO with nuclear weapons is beside the point. The point is that the series thrives on darkness and pure sadistic nastiness, and the manga version simply doesn't deliver. To begin with, thirty-some-odd pages leaves scant time to build villains up to sufficiently evil heights that their downfall is in any way satisfying. The climactic moment during which the villain's true nature becomes clear and the hero is forced to resort to the offices of Ai Enma passes too quickly, and the cathartic trip to hell is never nasty or drawn out enough. And as if to execute any possible hint of sadistic horror fun that might remain, Miyuki Eto illustrates the book as if it were, of all things, a shoujo romance. That her art is overcrowded, busy and sloppily composed even by normal standards is once again beside the point. The problem is far more fundamental. Her style simply doesn't mesh with the content. Murdering an atmospheric horror tale with flowery effects, crazy shoujo layouts, big shiny eyes and lapses into uber-cute SD humor is sadism of an entirely different sort, and not one that is intended to be enjoyed.

But where the animated version had color, music and comparatively spacious episode runtimes to transform it into a spooky, if repetitive, trip into hearts of darkness, compressed timeframes and a remarkably inappropriate artistic approach transform the paper version into a toothless mess.

Hell Girl is a fundamentally mean-spirited venture. It's a series of tales in which decent people are crapped on by some vile scumbucket until systematically backed into a corner from which their only hope for escape is supernatural intervention. Its world is populated exclusively with the nastiest, most selfish, deceitful and plain old evil specimens that humanity has to offer; fortunate developments are merely heights from which to fall, and even the kindest of people are destined to sully their souls with hatred and vengeance. Dark, pessimistic and possessed of a foul conception of human nature, the franchise is built upon the train-wreck appeal of personal disaster coupled with the vicarious thrill of watching the slimeballs responsible receive a bellyful of their own medicine. Not that that is of necessity a bad thing. It's a set-up rife with potential moral ambiguities and issues to explore, even if the stories in this volume have yet to do so. Or even try.

Beware any series whose female lead makes the deadly procession from cherry-petal-enshrouded, fatefully encountered bishoujo to mysterious transfer student to live-in maid in a single episode. Especially one that imitates, point for plot point, any dozen other like-minded series. Magikano is a graveyard of harem comedy clichés, a series whose utter lack of originality is only trumped by its inability to entertain.

Tellingly, if not surprisingly, a quick purview of Magikano's crew unearths strong links to two of the more abysmal series to muck their way onto the American market. Director Seiji Kishi's reliance on manic SD girl-fights to bolster limp humor more closely resembles his work on Galaxy Angel Rune than his anemic, but less irritating, direction on Ragnarok The Animation, but he maintains the same soul-sucking dearth of enthusiasm that blighted both. Katsuyuki Harada's score drills at the skull with the same sloppy, migrainic energy as his score for Rune, and Hideki Mitsui's writing does its best to give his obscenely stupid script for Ragnarök a run for its money, but fails thanks to his occasional successes with humor. When watching him cleverly, if less than tastefully, turn a joke involving a half-dressed girl and a giant, slimy eel on its head with a well-timed gender switcheroo, it's a little easier to believe that he's the same Hideki Mitsui who had a hand in the superb Fantastic Children.

For all of the staff inbreeding however, Magikano's heart—or what passes for it—isn't in works like Rune and Ragnarök, but in high-energy harem comedies like Kishi's later (and infinitely superior) Seto no Hanayome. There is one way in which Magikano distinguishes itself from creatively bankrupt but vaguely amusing series like Maburaho and Happy Lesson: it isn't even vaguely amusing. Which, in the name of succinctness, we'll for now blame solely on Magikano's cast. Where the others could be vaguely amusing because their cast was at least tolerable, everyone in Magikano—even, by some miracle, its passive lead—is so intolerably obnoxious that even vague amusement is out of the question. From Haruo's family, who dominate large stretches of each episode, to Ayumi's sister, whose screentime clocks in at under thirty seconds, the entire cast, with no exceptions is like a cheese grater to your nerve endings—nothing but base stereotypes sped up to freeway speeds, wound tighter than watch springs, and jacked up to brain-frying extremes. That Ayumi is a deceitful, self-centered dominatrix instead of a sweet, passive sexpot is the cast's one claim to something besides the lowest common denominator, but that doesn't make her interesting or sympathetic, simply different.

So lazy is the construction of the cast that even the character designs are lackluster, little more than generically cute—a fatal flaw in a genre that lives or dies by its female characters. So shallow is the animators' faith in the appeal of their character designs that when Ayumi is introduced they have side-characters describe her appealing qualities (like her small face...no, I don't understand it either) instead of letting the visuals speak for themselves. In the name of fairness, it should be mentioned that none of the other technical merits are high enough to merit referring to the character designs as a disappointment—despite computer-spruced magical mayhem that gets mighty close to being impressive whenever Ayumi gets her ire up and enough mad energy to distract from the otherwise mediocre animation. Nevertheless a bishoujo series really should have more "bi" in its shoujo than this.

ADV throws a platoon of veteran voice actresses at this title, all of whom immediately begin serving up thick, steaming slices of comedic ham. It's largely thanks to them, and the script's occasionally amusing rewrites, that the series works marginally better as a comedy in English. The addition of small print to the insert ads that accompany the suspicious technologies being pushed by Haruo's buddies was a particularly clever touch. The effort and talent, both of cast and crew, are wasted however on a series that no amount of tweaking can make anything less than thoroughly irritating. Though dropping the female cast's vocal register a notch or two does provide some blessed relief for much-abused eardrums.

The life of a Soul Reaper agrees pretty well with Ichigo. He gets to indulge his protective nature, he hangs out with cool, stylish (and invisible) people, and when he gets stressed, he can lop off people's arms to let off some steam. Sure, letting Kon run around in his body rubs him the wrong way and Rukia is always bugging him about leaving his soulless body lying about, but that's no reason to complain. When mysterious female Soul Reapers appear with swarms of blank, aggressive souls and evil Soul Reaper exiles in tow, then it's time to complain. Not that amnesiac Soul Reaper Senna means to raise three types of hell, she just can't help it, what with her being the unwitting key to a world-destroying conspiracy and all. She's also quite human and vulnerable, despite not being human or particularly weak, so she naturally sets Ichigo's protective instincts afire, which can mean nothing but pain for everyone involved.

The law against theatrical adaptations of long-running shounen series being anything but entirely disposable doesn't include a clause that says that they can't also be fun. Take Memories of Nobody. It follows all of the guidelines laid down for it and its ilk: It introduces an entirely new set of villains so that none of the established characters need fight each other. It introduces a new victim/major character so that none of the established characters need be put in danger that obviously cannot be consummated. It invents no new finishing moves, reduces the supporting cast to cameos, doesn't substantially change any of the major relationships, and influences the overall plot not a whit. And yet it manages to be unfailingly entertaining throughout.

In its ninety minute runtime the movie manages to pack in a bit of just about everything that makes Bleach fun. Set sometime after the end of the Soul Society arc, all of the fan-favorite characters make appearances, and even if major characters like Chad and Orihime feel unfairly de-emphasized, it's still nice to see them happy and well in the real world. Ichigo's father and K-ON! are on hand for some off-the-wall humor, including a running joke about people discovering Ichigo's “dead” body. The action is thick, and thick with slick cinematic flourishes, and all of the Soul Reapers get multiple opportunities to strut their stuff.

The film moves pretty swiftly, and if some of the scenes and plot points are truncated by the desire to cram a huge cast into a tiny movie, it still finds the time to make a surprisingly effective heroine out of Senna. Effective enough, at any rate, to make it a disappointment when she is reduced to a damsel in distress, and to make her fate of significant consequence to audiences. The ending twist about the ephemeral nature of her existence not only provides a bittersweet coda and gives meaning to the film's name, but also gives the film, self-aware genre fare that it is, the means with which to ramp up the emotional intensity without disrupting the television series' continuity.

Though designed to stand alone, Memories of Nobody isn't really intended for newcomers. Neophytes will be lost in the swamp of faces, and fondness for the characters and familiarity with their quirks and relationships is required for full enjoyment of the film. Even longtime fans, however, will find the excesses of some characters cheesy (Kenpachi falling from the sky, bellowing laughter, just in time to save Ichigo's hide is probably the worst of them), and their interactions often smell of pastiche, a scent that often haunts series where the animators have been freed from the restrictions of the original work.

At first it isn't so bad; in fact, so long as he has amnesia, Prince is fairly sympathetic. Oh, he's an ass, make no mistake—the effrontery of his intrusion into Yukitaka's life proves that. But he's a tragic (and funny) one, and not without a certain bumbling charm. Yukitaka helps too; his violent retorts to Prince's needling and harassment ensure that the royal stripling never gets away with his shenanigans completely unscathed. The importance of this mitigation becomes clear at the end of episode three, when an arc-ending twist puts a definitive end to it. That the twist cheapens everything that came before is what first rankles—without going into too much detail, the twist reveals that the series has been manipulating us much the way Prince manipulates his victims—but eventually that is overpowered by a longer-term and more lethal problem: No longer are Prince's actions the product of an enormous ego that simply doesn't know better; they're the intentionally abrasive acts of an unrepentant bastard. And there's no hope of comeuppance.

After that his hijinks stop being fun. That doesn't factor too much into the fourth episode, which is an unrelated but initially interesting side-story that ultimately cheapens itself much the way the opening arc did. The impact is really felt in the Color Rangers arc however. Any amusement it elicits is thanks solely to the Rangers. The kids' unflappability when faced with alien technology and reptilian femme fatales is consistently funny, and their ruthlessly mercenary turn when the full facts are revealed is considerably more than that. At least one of them (their leader) could be thrown into the same black hole that Prince deserves to be tossed in and not be missed, but on a whole they're a fun bunch. Prince, on the other hand, spends the arc tormenting the kids while singing bad folk songs dressed in a futuristic unitard. That might be funny were it not for the near certainty that he won't be taken to task for it. And for the bad aftertaste left by his personality. Never has Yukitaka, the first arc's human core and iron fist of justice (actually a razor tongue of justice, but who's quibbling), been so necessary. And so completely, infuriatingly absent.

For such an ultimately empty exercise in po-faced humor, an awful lot of talent and care was brought to bear. Kunihiko Ryo, whose music has evoked everything from medieval China to Victorian England, was conscripted into composing the score, which evokes very little—in part because it's infrequently used, in part because it understandably isn't his finest work, and in part because much of what it does evoke later proves to be lies. Similarly, Studio Pierrot and David Animation fill the series with realistically attractive characters, moody background art, impressive CG work, and scenes of great beauty—an early scene in which Prince's regenerative powers create an out-of-season blaze of cherry blossoms is particularly memorable—all of which are conspicuously wasted on stories that are never as important as their beautiful execution makes them out to be. Admittedly, the tension between the series' essentially goofy nature and the dead-serious superiority of its animation can be funny, sometimes very much so, but that doesn't stop it from also being frustrating.

Like Prince himself, Level E is undeniably clever, even audacious. That first twist was a bold move, no matter how you feel about it or what it ultimately does to the series. There's a quixotic dignity in its use of entire story-arcs to set up single gags and a laudable courage in its willingness to experiment (check out the aged atmosphere created by episode four's thick lines and faded colors). That doesn't make it fun to watch, however. In fact, each successive episode leaves one feeling emptier and less charitable towards Prince than the last. Whether the series can reverse that trend depends heavily on whether it gives Prince what's coming to him and gives us someone to identify with. Which is to say, it depends on whether it brings Yukitaka back or not. The pair's tsukkomi-boke rapport was the opening arc's saving grace, and could be once again. Until then, we'll be praying for that black hole.

Are you ready to laugh? Then switch your brains on, because the culturally literate humor of Gintama operates on a different level. On the surface, it may look like just another one of those "Ha ha look at silly people do silly things" comedies, but observant readers will laugh all the more because of the series' satirical edge. Volume 5's objects of ridicule include the following: beach episodes, J-horror clichés, Shonen Jump's obsession with powerful weapons, home shopping TV channels, yanki biker gangs, geisha culture, gay culture, kunoichi, and—in the author's notes—irritating readers who nitpick historical facts. But while there are plenty of laughs to be found, there really isn't a whole lot of plot, and the artwork can look stiff and confusing at times. Well, there's no such thing as perfect, right?

Even the gags in this volume suffer from imperfections—the make-fun-of-everything style of humor is a hit-or-miss affair, and the hits and misses often depend on personal taste. Chapter 4, for example, is about Gin's personal weapon being "the most powerful sword"—but readers will need to know the fantasy/adventure genre pretty well to get the joke. A couple of other comedic situations also require at least a basic knowledge of Japanese culture: the okama (drag queen) who runs a transvestite geisha house, for example, or the long-haired, toilet-dwelling ghost girl who goes around terrorizing the Shinsengumi. They say that knowledge is power, and in this case, cultural knowledge gives one the power to laugh at Gintama.

At first glance, the art in this series might look just as sharp as the humor—fine lines, plenty of detail and hatching—but it falls short when it comes to actual storytelling. The level of detail ends up obscuring a lot of the physical and visual gags; for example, we can't see that Gin is comically running away from a ghost because there's so much else going on in the panel. In addition, the artwork often lacks the action that's needed to make slapstick comedy work—the characters look more like they're doing static freeze-frame poses rather than actually moving. (Imagine how awkward this must look during the biker gang race scene.) But there are still some visual strong points, like the well-developed backgrounds and buildings that bring historical Japan to life, inaccurate as it may be. Character designs are also another source of enjoyment, with this volume's highlights being Gin in drag and a "cute animal" that hides a fearsome face.

Sarcastic, in-your-face dialogue is the final key to unlocking this series' sense of humor—in fact, even the creator himself gets in on the action. "Dear Mr. Sorachi, are you aware that so-and-so wasn't born during the Bakumatsu era?" "Dear reader, are you also aware that there were no alien invasions during the Bakumatsu era?" Talk about putting a guy in his place. Trash-talk and bravado are all a part of Gin and company's vocabulary, and it's delightful to read a translation that "gets it" and captures that attitude. On the downside, the dialogue does take up a lot of room, making the already crowded layouts even more eyestrain-inducing. Sound effects are also kind of a mess: all the sounds have been removed and replaced with English equivalents, but instead of blending into the artwork, they just look even more visually jarring. And for a series that's so heavily dependent on Japanese culture, they don't give you any footnotes or glossary—good luck kids, you're on your own with this one!

In its second volume Kurau: Phantom Memory (hereafter KPM) started to progress into a “fugitive action series” mode, a state which it fully adopts with this volume. Instead of Kurau doing the odd troubleshooter job, the action now all involves Kurau and Christmas's efforts to evade and/or escape the authorities, sometimes with Doug's help. Such scenes give Kurau plenty of further opportunities to show off the full extent of her Rynax powers, although equally important is Kurau's discovery in episode 12 that there may be more benign uses for her powers, too. And unlike before, Doug also gets his fair share of the action.

Taken solely as an action series, the content here does not do anything terribly remarkable. Scenes where a hero is able to escape because captors underestimate his/her power, and where a hero exploits his/her power and stealth to rescue a loved one from imprisonment, have been staples of both animated and live-action shows for decades, so even Kurau's flying vehicle-jumping derring-do, while thrilling, is unlikely to stand out much in the mind of viewers. Of greater note are suggestions that Ayaka might have personal reasons for specifically seeking Kurau and that not all of the bad guys necessarily have evil motives, as well as allusions to an accident a couple of years earlier which may have a distinct impact on the plot.

KPM has never been as much about its action component as its advertising blurbs make it out to be, however, and that proves true through these four episodes as well. Its greatest strength remains its beautifully evocative use of sentimentality and emotion, a realm in which the series has few peers. Too often in anime series the essence of the love and caring two characters are supposed to share gets lost in a morass of grandiose statements, overblown feature scenes, gimmickry, and unconvincing writing, but not here. Kurau and Christmas don't need to blush or declare their love for each other because any viewer can see from their actions, expressions, and behavior that they do deeply care for one another – and no, there's still not a hint of yuri overtones to it. This time, though, the best and most heartfelt scene instead belongs to Kurau and Dr. Amami, who consoles her in one scene in episode 12 where Kurau must make a heart-wrenching confession. The magic is not limited to the main characters, either; the passing of one character who appears for less than a full episode also proves surprisingly moving.

As good as the writing is, the emotional content could not work without great musical accompaniment. At its best the musical score wraps the viewer up in the wonder of the experience, especially when using variations on the strong closing theme “Moonlight” or its ethereal insert song. Other numbers, which offer some combination of light jazz, light rock, and electronica and often play during the action scenes, prove only marginally effective in establishing and supporting the mood.

Not every moment at Seika Academy is instant entertainment, however. The Misaki-Usui pairing may be a shining example of perfectly balanced (yet volatile) chemistry—he, the smug ladykiller with a soft spot; she, the charismatic overachiever who gets flustered at his advances—but the amusement factor drops off sharply after those two. Kanou, the hypnotist who was introduced as a villain in the previous volume, never really progresses past the level of unlikable side character and is eventually cast aside. Misaki's pals from the maid café, meanwhile, continue to be little more than a sideshow of girly-girl antics, not to mention that one boy who cross-dresses in Lolita garb (it was funny the first time, but he's only been an annoyance since then). Even the Idiot Trio—usually the best hope for a decent supporting cast—gets shafted by only appearing in the side-story chapters.

While the humor often adds up to more than the sum of the series' parts, the same can't be said for the artwork, which is often the weak spot in each chapter. Usui's devilish grins and Misaki's fiery expressions of rage are often drowned out by cluttered layouts and a rather pedestrian visual style. Let's be honest here: an unknowing reader, glancing through this volume for the first time, would probably dismiss it as "just some kind of shoujo thing"—and end up missing out on a perfectly fine comedy. An overflow of predictable character designs, repetitive and crowded imagery, and screentones in every nook and cranny end up being more of an eyestrain than eye candy. The one glimmer of creativity is in the Momotaro spoof, which takes the best of gag strips and children's manga and blends it with the series' own style to form an outlandish and amusing result.

The underwhelming art can also be blamed on the dialogue, which often ends up taking too much room on the page and crowds out the very characters who are supposed to be speaking those lines. Now, the lines themselves are very, very good—Misaki and Usui clearly haven't run out of sharp comebacks and one-liners, and the translation captures that energy perfectly—but this is still a visual medium, not a transcription of high school kids shooting smart-mouthed banter at each other. Ironically, the bonus "Requests Corner" in the back is a transcription of smart-mouthed banter, but again, that kind of material should be complementary to the story and not be overpowering it. And with so much text to follow, few will be concerned about the number of sound effects that go untranslated in this edition—besides, it's the characters and what they say that really make this series anyway.

From mad hypnotists to beach trips to re-imagined fairy tales, Maid Sama! has a way of turning even the most banal story concept into worthwhile entertainment. Like previous installments, this volume has some shortcomings—but the intense drive to generate as many laughs as possible often overcomes those issues. Misaki and Usui's constant back-and-forth bickering is a key component to that success, and their personalities have a way of pulling out pleasant surprises when the moment is right. Whether it's Usui showing some heart behind his cool exterior, or self-confident Misaki suddenly wavering under pressure, these two continue to reveal hidden layers that go well beyond working a secret job at a maid café. Who knows, one day they might even admit their feelings for each other ... but not just yet. Watching them go at it like this is way more fun.

The first story effectively removes Sunako by totally changing her personality, and while it's nice to see her softer side, the "illegitimate son" story doesn't really give her much of a chance to strut her stuff. The Halloween party allows her a brief return to form when the audience is treated to a demonstration of the lengths to which she'll go to secure more scary "toys" for her room, but it's back to toothless Sunako for the ghost story. Not that this volume is devoid of good Sunako moments. There's at least one per chapter: Sunako watching a gory slasher flick with unholy relish in the first chapter; Sunako playing fairy-tale witch to a child's mother ("I will raise the child.") in the second; Sunako experiencing the joys of a real-live torture chamber in the third; Sunako's twisted imaginings of what happens at a hospital in the fourth. What these moments lack, however, is the extremity and impact of Sunako's early rampages. In previous volumes, Sunako's outbursts were fueled by an outraged justice that transformed her into a very cool dervish of righteous vengeance. There is none of that here. This isn't an inherently bad thing, but when it is literally all that prevents your manga from joining the ranks of the undead, it is a serious problem.

One might note the lack of any mention of the four boys in this review. There's a reason for this. There's nothing to say. The boys never had much in the way of personality (no more than is necessary to distinguish them from one another), and the story has been treading water so long that the characters are in some sort of stasis now.

Hayakawa's artwork is part of the problem. She hardly even bothers to draw Sunako any more, except as a black-robed SD blob. Her backgrounds are nonexistent. She doesn't even bother with establishing settings. Occasionally the setting will change without any clue from the blank artwork, leaving it up to the reader to deduce the change from the narrative context. So where does she allocate all of her artistic energies? Well, occasionally she actually draws Sunako. These scenes, while rare, do show obvious care and are often quite beautiful, but her real focus is her bishounen. They are the most detailed characters of all (even if they spend about 50% of the time in SD form). Unfortunately their physical perfection makes it hard to tell them apart (particularly Ranmaru and Kyohei).
